Helping donkeys on Inis Mór

Donkeys on Inis Mór

Inis Mór is the largest of the Aran Islands in Galway Bay which has a population of donkeys roaming the island.

We committed to improving the welfare of donkeys in communities across Ireland and when we were asked to help donkeys living on Inis Mór, our welfare team responded.

In early November, two members of our team travelled to the remote, picturesque island to meet with donkey owners to support and advise them on how to improve the welfare of their animals.

None of our vital community-based work would be possible without the donations we receive from the donkey owners we support and our generous supporters.

In early November, two of our donkey welfare advisers visited Inis Mór, the largest of the Aran Island, only accessible by air or sea on a wellness check of all the donkeys to trim hooves, provide education to the owners and give as much assistance to the donkeys and owners. Due to the remoteness of the island, it's difficult for the owners to find farriers and vets.

Both Eugene and David, set to work straight away on arrival onto the island and found the donkeys in good condition and well cared for by their owners.

During the one day they were there, while adhering to strict Covid-19 regulations, they met with 15 different donkey owners and assessed 24 donkeys. They listened and advised the islanders on different aspects of donkey care.

Our community support work is only possible due to donations received from donkey owners like those on Inis Mór and our generous supporters.
