Protecting precious new lives in the community

Since we rescued a mare and her yearling from bleak conditions in 2024, their family has expanded with a new member and all three are thriving in their new home.

Betty and Bubbles were found by a couple on an acquired piece of land, who reached out to Donkey Welfare Adviser Eva Ellis for advice and support.

“It was clear that the donkeys’ needs hadn’t been met for some time and they were in a worrying condition,” Eva recalls from her first visit. “We contacted a local vet to help provide the urgent care they needed and gave them food and water to build their strength.”

Betty and Bubbles had no shelter and were freezing cold in the wet weather

During her check-up with the vet, we discovered that Betty was pregnant. This unfortunate cycle of indiscriminate breeding continues due to the high number of mares and stallions that are regularly abandoned and left to breed.

The couple who had acquired the land asked for our support to privately rehome the pair, and within two weeks Betty and Bubbles started their journey towards a brighter future in County Cavan with their new owners.

Eva says: “Although they have lots of equine experience, we supported Betty and Bubbles’ owners every step of the way, providing farrier care, performing dentals, deploying microchips and preparing them for their new arrival.

“We kept in regular contact with the home, and we were delighted when we received the news that Betty’s colt foal - later named Peek-a-boo - arrived safely.

Peek-a-boo was born into a warm and loving environment

“I am so happy we were able to provide all three with the care and love they needed and deserve. Our intervention was critical and possibly lifesaving, especially for Peek-a-boo.”

Over the past two years, our sanctuary has faced many challenges. Despite our changes in circumstances that prevent us bringing new donkeys to our sanctuary, our dedication to their welfare hasn’t wavered.

Donkeys like Betty, Bubbles and Peek-a-boo deserve not just a safe shelter, but a life filled with love and care, and together we’ve been able to give them just that.

While indiscriminate breeding continues to be a huge problem, we will continue to do everything we can to protect every precious little life that arrives.

We remain committed to Betty, Bubbles and Peek-a-boo on their journey. When Peek-a-boo comes of age, we’ll also assist with his castration, a significant move toward managing the overpopulation of donkeys in Ireland.
