A day in the life of an adoption donkey

A day in the life of an adoption donkey

Although their days differ, take a sneak peek into a typical day in the lives of our adorable adoption donkeys from September to April.

8am – 10am: It’s time for breakfast! Our donkeys kick-start their day with forage balancer. We give extra feed to Richie who struggles to maintain his weight, the additional feed helps to keep him healthy.

While our farm grooms clean the yards, the group head out to their sand or wood chip areas to enjoy some enrichment time. Once the yards are clean, they return to enjoy some delicious straw. Jacksie is a total foodie, so you often see him leading the way.

2pm: Important training! It’s time for hoof cleaning and positive training sessions, focusing on improving our donkey’s comfort while being handled, which is especially important for nervous donkeys like Beauty and Roma.

4pm: Relax and unwind! As the evening closes in, Richie enjoys his evening meal of mashed high-fibre nuts and fibre beet mixed with water, before retreating with the rest of the group into the warmth of their sheds for the night.

During the months of April to September, our donkeys are also taken out to their fields to graze. This is known as ‘spring turnout’.
