Donkeys in the community

Patch and Pippin

Our Donkey Welfare Advisers (DWA) regularly support donkey owners with advice about how to care for their animals. Marie Johnston, DWA, received a recent request from a donkey owner who had given a home to two donkeys but found that she was struggling with handling the animals. Tasks like putting on head collars and grooming were proving difficult and she needed Marie’s advice.

Marie spent an afternoon with the owner and her donkeys, Patch and Pippin. Marie watched the owner’s confidence grow as she learned more about handling her donkeys. By the end of the session, Patch and Pippin were relaxed and happy to have their head collars put on as they enjoyed lots of scratches from Marie and their owner.

Later on that day Marie received a message from the donkey owner:

"Marie, thank you very much for calling this afternoon. I learnt a lot and I greatly appreciate your help and advice. Such a difference this evening after I gave them (Patch and Pippin) their supper. Patch stood still without much coaxing and seemed very comfortable while I rubbed him. Pippin was also very content to get his rub too. Thanks again."

Thanks to your ongoing support, by making a donation, we can continue supporting donkeys in the community.
