Did you know that donkeys can live for up to fifty years if treated correctly?
We have almost 1,700 donkeys altogether in our care in Ireland ranging from new-born foals to our oldest donkey Tootsie who is the amazing age of 53 years! Tootsie has a clean bill of health and is a joy to watch and work with. Please take this important point into consideration if thinking about getting a donkey or a foal as a pet, it may be a life-long commitment.
Our eldest donkeys are all in a group together, affectionately known as ‘The Super Grannies Group!’
Like humans, as donkeys get older their eyesight and teeth may deteriorate so we account for these factors. Some older donkeys also suffer with respiratory problems so we combat this issue by keeping them away from straw and using wood shavings for their bedding,
Their enclosure is super safe and accessible and tailored to their specific needs. They are on a diet of easy to digest nutritious food and live a very happy, peaceful life.
Our Quality Time Volunteers love to spend time with the ‘Super Grannies’ and spoil them with kisses and cuddles. While being groomed it is not uncommon for them to nod off!
