Edith and Mini look forward to Spring
Posted on 14 January 2016.Donkeys Edith and Mini were taken into the care of The Sanctuary in July 2015. Their owners could no longer care for them and made the responsible decision to contact us and ask for assistance. Our Welfare team sprung into action and before long these two donkeys were settling into life in Liscarroll.
The donkeys were in good condition, they were assessed by our Veterinary team and tests proved that Edith was in foal. A donkeys gestation period can last between 10-14 months and she was not very far gone so we anticipate that she will have her foal in the Spring/Summer months.
The Donkey Sanctuary operates a no breeding policy which means that all male donkeys are castrated but in the occasion where we rescue a mare that is already in foal we offer the foal a lifetime of security and protection.
Edith and Mini are currently residing in a very comfortable big barn in our Open Farm in Knockardbane. They are sharing with another group of female donkeys and they all get along great. They are looking forward to getting back out into the paddocks when the weather improves, here they will enjoy helpings of green grass and fun and frolics.
The donkeys love to meet visitors and enjoy a cuddle so please do come and visit us and stay tuned for updates on Edith's progress.
