Welfare
Care and advice
The Donkey Sanctuary has published a number of books and fact sheets. The list below is aimed at owners of donkeys or those considering getting a donkey.
Stolen donkeys
From time to time thieves target stables and fields in order to steal donkeys and equipment. The Sanctuary is able to assist owners in the prevention of crime by giving advice on security of premises.
We are concerned by the number of donkeys being stolen from a number of locations throughout Ireland. In some cases thieves have gone to some trouble to locate the donkeys and gain entry to the premises.
Donkey in distress?
The Donkey Sanctuary has a dedicated team of regional and area welfare officers throughout the UK and Ireland who investigate reports of cruelty to or neglect of donkeys, quickly and efficiently.
If you are concerned about the welfare of any donkey, please contact us by telephone immediately.
All calls are treated in the strictest of confidence.
Donkey passports
Yes it is true, every equine owner, both in Ireland and Europe has to have a passport for their donkey, mule, horse and pony.
Unfortunately The Donkey Sanctuary cannot issue passports. You will have to contact the Irish Horse Board at the Department of Agriculture and Food.
