Abandoned donkeys

Anzack and Cojack

This year we have seen a massive increase in abandoned donkeys throughout the country. Some of these donkeys are fit and healthy but due to the economic situation have been left in fields and on the side of the road to fend for themselves. Others are in terrible condition with overgrown hooves, matted coats, skin conditions and sarcoids.

Anzak and Cojack are two such donkeys who were found roaming the road in Co Wexford in March this year, they were in terrible condition skinny with overgrown hooves and covered in lice. Unfortunately Anzac (pictured in the foreground) due to his sad history was unable to recover and died on the 1st of May. Cojack lives in our main group in Hannigan’s farm and is improving slowly.

Padjo

Padjo another abandoned donkey was found in a field in Co Mayo last week in terrible condition with twisted and overgrown hooves. As no owner could be found he was relinquished to us by the Gardai. He is now in livery awaiting transfer to The Donkey Sanctuary here in Liscarroll.

There are many more donkeys taken into our care in recent times with similar stories like Anzak, Cojack and Padjo’s. Without the help of our supporters these donkeys would have no chance at the new life which they so desperately deserve.
