Lizzy and Cohan happy in 'The Oldie Group'

Lizzy and Cohan

Lizzy was rescued by a very kind lady from Co Mayo in 2008; she was in a terrible state and was near death. This lady brought her back to health and put Lizzy with her own donkeys where she subsequently got pregnant and gave birth to a foal called Cohan in May 2009. However it became clear that Lizzy needed specialist care so it was decided to relinquish Lizzy and Cohan to the Sanctuary in June 2009.

Lizzy received intensive treatment when she came into our hospital and in no time at all she and Cohan joined our oldie group near the Visitor Information Centre here at the Sanctuary. She is a very shy and timid donkey and prefers the company of the older donkeys. Cohan has some friends to play with, as this group also houses some young foals who have often found surrogate parents in the oldie group.

Lizzy and Cohan are a very unusual chestnut roan colour and have near identical markings who are a big attraction for our visitors. Lizzy is now back to full health and she and Cohan are assured the love, care and attention they so deserve here at the Sanctuary for the rest of their lives.

How wonderful to read about Lizzie and Cohan this morning!!

We were given Lizzie by her owner as she needed help. She had terrible rain scald as she had no shelter in her field. Her back was open sores and bleeding...( this was in August!). She was just skin and bones.. we found that she had 2 teeth that were grown so long that they were actually growing into the roof of her mouth, which meant that she couldn't close her mouth to eat properly... so was slowly starving to death.

She is a darling donkey that soon recovered well. Sadly due to the years of neglect we felt that she would be better being where she could get constant specialist care. Her feet needed expert care and laminitis was always a worry.

We are so pleased to hear that she is with the oldies... she will love that !! Our other donkeys liked to be together in a large shelter, but Lizzie would put herself into a stable on her own !

We miss her and Cohan very much.... but are so very grateful that they will both be looked after, and loved, for the rest of their lives. Thank you so much for the wonderful work that you do.
