Moses enjoying retirement

Moses came to the Sanctuary in June 2001 as a 14 year old gelding from Co Kilkenny. His owner relinquished him to us as he felt Moses was dangerous to his cattle and to people. He was very cross and did not like people very much when he arrived. Debbie Barrett, who lived at Hannigan's Farm at the time, remembers Moses kicking the door of his stable in an effort to get out. He was classed as one of the most dangerous donkeys ever to come into the Sanctuary!

However, the staff here at the Sanctuary were having none of it and with a lot of persuasion, love and hard work Moses started to trust people and became a firm favourite with all who got to know him.

It wasn't long before Moses caught the eye of Paddy Barrett, hence his debut as a celebrity donkey, where at first he travelled with Lucky Lady to churches, schools, shows, etc and later with his good donkey friend Finn.

Today Moses is 23 years old and has retired from his celebrity status. He can be seen in our oldie group adjacent to the Visitor Information Centre. He loves visitors especially children and he definitely loves his photograph been taken and has been known to rest his head on the fence in a pose when he sees someone with a camera.
