This year we are celebrating 30 years of rescuing and rehabilitating donkeys but we are also acknowledging the fact that we have spent a great deal of time educating the public and offering information and advice on donkey welfare in Ireland.
The Donkey Sanctuary Ireland worked tirelessly to establish an education programme that could be rolled out in schools throughout the country in order to teach young people on how best to treat donkeys and respect animals. This legacy lives on as we welcome countless groups into the Sanctuary each year and we also make visits out to schools, nursing homes and attend events.
When meeting a group Donkey Sanctuary representatives begin by providing a brief history into the charity and the reasons why it was set up in 1987. We introduce visitors to our adoption donkeys which are located behind the Visitor Centre and a very popular attraction as people from all over the world have adopted them. We answer any questions that the group may have and then it is time to enjoy meeting all of the donkeys while enjoying the beautiful walkways. On return you can purchase a hot beverage or a snack in the Visitor Centre or you can pick up a donkey souvenir. There is no admission or parking fee but donations are gratefully received. It is a fun filled day out for all of the family and a great opportunity to see what beautiful, gentle animals donkeys are.
Both donkeys and people thoroughly enjoy this interaction and it holds great benefits for all involved as donkeys have a very calming effect on those in their company.
